I had a copy of Helene Bress' book for years, then gave it away to a new student when I moved on to other things. When I decided to start inkling again I looked and looked for the Bress book, but it was tough to find and expensive when I got lucky. Then THIS book came out! I don't care if I never see the Bress book again...this book is the absolute best book for inkling that I could imagine!First off, the binding is excellent...flat-opening spiral binding that makes keeping a pattern page open as simple as possible. The paper is sturdy and medium glossy, making the photo examples as beautiful as possible. The photography is excellent, with necessary close-ups and nice, thoughtful displays. The threading patterns are sensible and easy to read. And, bottom-line, the price is more than reasonable considering the work that went into this comprehensive volume. This truly can be the first and last inkle book a weaver would need, with enough patterns and variations to keep one busy for a very long (and satisfying) time.
This is a great book that I recommend to everyone who has learned to put string on an inkle loom and then says "now what?" However, it does have a couple drawbacks. If you don't know how to make string heddles, or warp your loom, this book is not really going to teach you that. Luckily, you can find that info on the internet or perhaps in instructions that came with your loom. Secondly, if you are not familiar with reading inkle pattern drafts, the learning curve for using this book is kind of steep. However, if you're serious about inkle weaving and want to learn techniques like lettering, Baltic style pickup, Monk's Belt, using an additional heddle, and more, this book should absolutely have a place in your library.
I got this book because it was what was "linked" (others bought XXX with this...) to the loom I was buying, so I decided to try it. The book has a hard cover and spirals for the spine that allow the pages to lie flat--very nice feature and excellent forethought on the author's and/or publisher's part. The patterns in there are very cool and I'm looking forward to trying most of them--and coming up with some of my own (which the author encourages)! Anne Dixon clearly knows what she is doing, and while her directions and information are good and definitely useful, she's been doing it so long that some of it was a bit over my head (being the complete novice that I am). However, I've been able to fill in the gaps by watching videos on inkle looms and how to weave on them. (Yay for Google and nice people who post stuff!) The three videos that helped the most were quite different from each other (beginner to expert) and different styles (no doubt that contributed to them being helpful). The three are:http://edythmiller.blogspot.com/2014/02/baltic-style-pickup-inkle-weaving.html (Edyth Miller's blog post was particularly helpful)http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gec2C_ChCm8http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=08huXOt_46USo, this book gets 4 stars rather than 5 because the beginner-level information could have been put together clearer and in a more accessible way...but it's worth the investment.
This is a MUST HAVE for the inkle or tape loom owner. This isn't a "how to get started with your loom" guide. You'll need a simple pamphlet from your loom manufacturer and maybe a YouTube video to learn to warp your loom and get good tension, to start and end a band, etc. This is the book you'll keep with your loom, the magic, the pattern guide! It contains the information you'll want for the rest of your journey with the band-type loom. Good examples, handy layout, lays flat. The companion to Anne Dixon's Handweaver's Pattern Directory that lives next to my floor looms.
Never have I heard as much fowl language from my wife than after Christmas, than due to this book. Moments of quiet focused work followed by loud, vulgar cursing. I don't think I have enjoyed a Christmas present this much in years. I will say however that when she finished her weaves, they are OUTSTANDING! The patterns are simply described and just takes time to go through them. Great book.
The Weaver's Inkle pattern Directory is an in-depth resource for inkle weavers of all skill levels. Rather than being a simple visual compilation of inkle band patterns, it goes into detailed explanation of various techniques including some which are more commonly seen on other types of looms or in other types of weaving such as tablet weaving or monk's belt. I think this is a great book, and you won't regret your purchase.
I am new at Inkle Loom Weaving. I received three different types of looms and this book for Christmas. Due to this book and the way it is laid out, I have been learning to warp-face weave without undue difficulty. I found that if I follow it as it is laid out, I do quite well. I really think this is a good book for beginners and think it's information and patterns will make it useful even for advanced weavers. It covers SO MANY different types of weaves from around the world, explaining them and charting the designs for you to follow. I would recommend this book for anyone wanting to learn Inkle Weaving and also to experienced weavers as a pattern and reference source.
I got this book as I decided to learn inkle weaving over a holiday - the majority of the patterns and early parts of the book are pretty clear and easy to follow. I got confused by some of the pattern instructions for the pick up weaving, but after some experimentation, I finally figured it out.One complaint I might have is that the patterns are very small - I can follow them, but the blocks are tiny and difficult to count which threads are what on the complex patterns as the drafts are tiny. For patterns I want to do, I will probably make a photocopy and blow it up to have easier views of the threads.
